Ava Duvernay strikes again with her riveting new documentary on Netflix called "13th". 13th explores the transformation of slavery (yes, transformation) into a mass incarceration of Black people due to a simple clause in the 13th amendment of the United States Constitution. As I watched the almost 2-hour long film, I cringed because these are facts that I know already being presented to me in one sitting. It is the truth we shy away from a lot of times because it is too harsh to even fathom that we live in such a world. Unfortunately, our country was born from this madness and it's never gone away.
It was especially refreshing to see a documentary like this come out at such a crucial time. As we all know, it's election season and with all that has been going on in America (the police-civilian lynchings especially) Black people have been stressed out to the max. This film shows the ugly side of each party and their current front-runners as a way to reveal the corruption of politics as a whole, especially as it relates to problems with the 13th amendment. Obviously, we know how transparent Donald Trump has been with his all out hate campaign, so that is no surprise. However, we also get the truth about Former president Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton (who's running her presidential campaign now also) and how involved they were in vilifying Black children and filling up the prisons.
You also get to see just how closely the prison system is tied in with corporations in her breakdown of ALEC and its beneficial relationship with politicians and law-making. That was the scariest part for me. Okay, I don't want to ruin this for you if you haven't seen it already. I urge you to watch this documentary. It will open your eyes and have you ready to figure out what's next. I know it did for me. Watch the trailer below!
